Why Berets….?
So, what is with the berets anyways? When I was 16, I began wearing a beret. I remember it clearly - it was a gorgeous shade of light blue. I picked up this fashion adornment from my dear late mother. I do not know when she began wearing a beret, but she was a fashion model in her 20s. My mom was a beautiful, kind, energetic, and gracious woman, right up to the day she died on June 2 of 2020. When my mom turned 90, she wanted very little for her birthday, except maybe a new beret. The family got together and we each gave her a beret. After opening the third one, she was onto ‘the game’. Nonetheless, she enjoyed all those berets (see photo). I believe she received 12 new berets that day. I have worn a beret nearly every day, except when wearing another kind of hat, for over 35 years. I wore a beret when I worked in a flower shop; I wore a beret when I worked for a government office in the Housing Department; I wore a beret taking various courses, in University and Colleges; I wore a beret even when I was a Health Care Aide (aka Carer, Personal Support Worker, Nursing Assistant). My beret always matched my scrubs. No one complained. I even wore a beret playing in the local orchestra. I feel naked if I do not have a beret on. So did my mother. Parkhurst Canada makes the best berets. Parkhurst is a long standing Canadian hat company, which was founded in 1926. Consider wearing berets - they are warm, they are pretty, they even look good on most men, and you can wear one in a number of different ways. My mom and I always jokingly disagreed which side of the head the “jaunty slant” should be on. My dear mother was buried with a green beret on. She loved the green of the Isles (Ireland, Scotland, and Wales), and green flowers. Hats off to Mom, and to beret wearers everywhere.
